Herman Schoonderwalt (born December 23, 1931 in Eindhoven ; † June 15, 1997 in Bosch en Duin ) was a Dutch jazz saxophonist (alto saxophone, but also baritone and soprano saxophone), clarinetist, flutist, composer, arranger and big band leader. He played old-time jazz, swing, bop and rock jazz.

Live and act

Schoonderwalt was self-taught on all of his instruments. He first played Dixieland before turning to modern jazz . In 1955 he recorded as a member of the Dutch All Stars , but also with his own septet. In the late 1950s he was part of the swing band "The Millers" at times. In 1953 he toured Germany with Fred Logistik, in 1955 with Sandy Mosse in Sweden and in 1956 in Spain with the Miller Sextet. He also played with Pim (recorded in 1958, 1974) and Ruud Jacobs . From 1958 to 1961 he was also a member of the Rhythme All Stars . From 1961 he was a saxophonist in the Boy Edgar Big Band and accompanied the singer Rita Reys in the Oliver Nelson Band (recorded by Philips in 1965). In the 1950s and 1960s he won the polls of various Dutch jazz magazines in baritone saxophone and clarinet. In the late 1960s he played in the Hobby Orkest with Cees Smal and Frans Elsen . In the 1970s he had his own quartet with Nico Bunink , Wim Essed and Peter Ypma and played in the group Basic Train . He played u. a. with trumpeters Red Rodney (1975, “Scrapple from the Apple”, live from Nick Vollebregt's Jazzcafe in Laren ) and Dizzy Gillespie and accompanied the singers Mel Tormé and Astrud Gilberto ; he was also involved in recordings by Ben Webster (1970), Rolf Kühn (1962) and Charly Antolini (1970). In 1987 he became the leader of the big band "The Skymasters" (until 1996). In 1993 he brought out the album "Sounds of Silence" with his own compositions. He also taught at the Hilversum Conservatory and wrote music for film and television.

Schoonderwalt died of liver disease in his place of residence.

In 1963 he received the first Wessel Ilcken Prize .
