Cees Smal

Cees Smal (born September 22, 1927 in Haarlem ; † 2001 ) was a Dutch modern jazz musician , especially with trombone and trumpet, but also horn, alto saxophone, clarinet, piano, and also composer and arranger .

As a teenager, Smal had private piano lessons, but was also self-taught in jazz (in the 1970s he attended courses in harmony and counterpoint ). He played as a jazz musician since 1946, was with the Flamingos in 1950 , with the Millers in 1951/52 and with Ted Powder from 1953 to 1955 and 1957. In the 1950s he was a member of the hardbop combo Diamond Five by Cees Slinger . From 1958 to 1968 he played in the Big Band of Boy Edgar and later in that of Frans Elsen , with whom he already in the 1960s in the hobby Orchestra (later Het Nederlands Jazzorkest ) played, he co-founded in 1968 and directed. He also played with his own quartets and quintets and was involved in a total of 60 recordings.
