Joseph Scianni

Joseph "Joe" Scianni (born October 6, 1928 in Memphis (Tennessee) ) is an American composer , music producer and ( jazz ) musician ( piano , big band leader).

Live and act

Scianni studied biology at what was then Southwestern University (now Rhodes College ) in his hometown, before continuing to study music at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester (New York) . There, after completing his military service, he received his doctorate in 1958 on the Sinfonia breve .

From the same year he worked for Columbia Records , where he was appointed associate producer for the classic series Masterworks in 1959. Among other things, he produced numerous recordings of Glenn Gould . He also conducted studio orchestras, for example for Tony Morell ( Here's to Love ).

He also played as a pianist in various ensembles and formed the Joseph Scianni Trio , which advanced into the field of jazz. He also worked with trumpeter Don Cherry and in 1965 released a duo album with bassist David Izenzon , which John Corbett recognized decades later as outstanding.

In 1966 he was appointed to the New York College of Music as a professor to teach composition at New York University from 1968 and to lead its jazz ensemble. His compositions have also been recorded for the Mercury label.

Scianni did not make further recordings until 1996, this time with Mark Whitecage , Dominic Duval and Jay Rosen . Ivo Perelman also brought him in 1998 to record his album The Seven Energies of the Universe .
