Nora McCarthy

Nora McCarthy (born February 1, 1958 in Cleveland ) is an American poet and jazz singer .

At the age of twenty she began to write poetry, some of which are dedicated to musicians such as Charlie Parker , Bill Evans , Miles Davis , Dizzy Gillespie , Eric Dolphy , John Coltrane , Jeanne Lee and Abbey Lincoln . McCarthy also wrote lyrics for some jazz standards and songs, for example by JJ Johnson , Antônio Carlos Jobim , Denny Zeitlin , Bill Evans, Sonny Rollins , Ornette Coleman and Scott LaFaro . In 1994 she brought Lawrence Butch Morris on as a soloist in his A Chorus of Poets .

In 1998 she released her first album red & blue . Later she worked with the bassist Dominic Duval and since 2001 with the saxophonist Jorge Sylvester in various formations. She has also performed with Frank Lacy , Jiunie Booth , Santi Debriano , Ken Filiano , James Weidman , Neal Creque, and Wilson Pickett . She has also toured Latin America and Southern Europe. In 2008 she was invited to the first Jazz & Poetry Marathon . She can also be heard on recordings by George Brandon and Gunter Hampel .
