Richard Einhorn (born August 2, 1952 in Newark , New Jersey , USA ) is an American composer.

biography

Richard Einhorn began composing at the age of 15 as a founding member of Alfonso , a multimedia ensemble. He studied composition and electronic music with Jack Beeson , Vladimir Ussachevsky and Mario Davidovsky . He graduated from Columbia University in 1975 with summa cum laude. He then worked at CBS Masterworks, where he produced recordings for Meredith Monk , The New York Philharmonic , Jean-Pierre Rampal and Isaac Stern , among others . Einhorn's production of Bach's cello suites with Yo-Yo Ma received the Grammy for “Best Instrumental Recording”. In 1982 he left CBS to concentrate on composing.

Einhorn composes operas, chamber music, song cycles, ballets and film music . Voices of Light , his “opera with silent film” for the historic silent film La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc , has been shown 150 times in the USA, among others in the Avery Fisher Hall and the Kennedy Center, in the Opera House in Sydney (Australia ), in Singapore, Johannesburg and Pretoria. Einhorn composed the work Red Angels for the New York City Ballet , the premiere of which was broadcast live on television in 2002.

His work The Origin , composed in 2008, was premiered in Europe in February 2012 in the Konzerthaus Glocke in Bremen.

He has also composed music for the documentary short Educating Peter (HBO), which won the Academy Award (Oscar) in 1992, and for Arthur Penn's thriller Dead of Winter (MGM) . Einhorn's score for Fire-Eater by Pirjo Honkasalo won the Jussi (Finnish Academy Award, for Best Musical Score ).

Einhorn lives in New York City with his wife Amy Singer and daughter Miranda.
