investment

Use of the park is free of charge. The park is located at the western end of the Columbia River Gorge near the confluence of the Sandy River and the Columbia River . The park is located on the Historic Columbia River Highway and consists of a tree-lined meadow with picnic benches and sanitary facilities. At the park there is a popular swimming area in the Sandy River and a freely usable boat ramp. One trail leads to Broughton's Bluff , a cliff that forms the geological boundary between the Cascade Mountains and the neighboring Willamette Valley .

history

The park was named after the Lewis and Clark expedition that camped here on November 3, 1805 on their way to the Pacific. On their way back in April 1806, they camped at the mouth of the Sandy River for six days, and a small group drove up the Sandy River. But they soon discovered that the river is just a small tributary that comes from the slopes of Mount Hood and is not navigable due to rapids and waterfalls. When the boats were docked, the explorers were troubled by flowing sand , so they called the river the Quicksand River. This name was later shortened to Sandy River.

In 1936 Multnomah County gave part of the park area to the State of Oregon. Until 1962, the park was expanded to its present size through acquisitions and donations.
