Conde McCullough
Conde Balcom McCullough (born May 30, 1887 in Redfield , South Dakota , † May 6, 1946 in Salem , Marion County , Oregon ) was an American civil engineer who was primarily responsible for the planning of bridges on the west coast of the United States trending US Highway 101 within Oregon is known. Originally from South Dakota, McCullough worked for the Oregon Department of Transportation from 1919 to 1935 and again from 1937 to 1946 . McCullough was a professor at Oregon State University .
Early life
In 1891 his family moved to Iowa , where their father died in 1904. McCullough took on several jobs to support his family. In 1910 he graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in civil engineering .
Career
McCullough began his professional career with the Marsh Bridge Company in Des Moines , Iowa, where he stayed for a year. Then he accepted a position on the Iowa State Highway Commission . In 1916, Conde moved to Oregon and became an assistant professor at Oregon Agricultural College , where he was the only college professor of civil engineering. In 1919 he became director of the bridge construction division in the Oregon Department of Transportation . This position made him responsible for the design drafts of the bridge structures in the course of the completion of US Highway 101 within Oregon.
His designs became known for their architectural beauty. McCullough advocated that bridges should not only be built in an economically efficient manner, but also that they should meet the aesthetic requirements. Through his work in the state's Department of Transportation, he was involved in the planning of more than 600 bridge structures, many of which have architectural features such as neo-Gothic turrets, Art Deco obelisks and Romanesque arches. He graduated from Willamette University College of Law in 1928 and was admitted to the bar that same year . In 1935 he moved to San José , Costa Rica , where he helped plan the Panamericana . In 1937 he returned to Oregon and became assistant director of the state's highway administration.
Death and legacy
McCullough died of a heart attack on May 6, 1946. After his death, the state administration renamed the Coos Bay Bridge the Conde McCullough Memorial Bridge .
Together with his son, the lawyer John McCullough, he published the magazine The Engineer at Law .
