Roxborough is a city on the Caribbean island of Tobago in Trinidad and Tobago . It is the capital of the Eastern Tobago region.

geography

It is located in the east of the island on the south coast on the Atlantic Ocean and has 2089 inhabitants (2011 census). It is connected to Scarborough , the island's capital, via the Winward Road , which runs along the south coast ; this road continues via Speyside to Charlotteville . Another road leads across the island to the north coast to Parlatuvier.

About 1 km to the northwest is the Argyle waterfall .

history

The place is named after a former sugar cane plantation, the Roxborough Estate. In 1876 the Belmanna riots, named after the police chief at the time, took place on the plantation. The blacks freed from slavery could only get work from their former masters, which was also poorly paid. Out of dissatisfaction, they set fire to many buildings in the city.
