Darius Leonard (* 27. July 1995 in Mullins , South Carolina ) is an American American football player at the position of the linebackers . He played college football for South Carolina State University and has been with the Indianapolis Colts in the National Football League (NFL) since 2018 .
college
Leonard grew up and attended high school in Lake View , Dillon County , South Carolina . His older stepbrother Anthony Waters played in the NFL from 2007 to 2010.
Leonard played college football from 2014 to 2017 . He attended South Carolina State University , where he played for South Carolina State Bulldogs in the NCAA Division I FBS.
In total, he had 394 tackles in four seasons , including 53 for loss of space, 21.5 sacks , six interceptions and eight forced fumbles . He has been named MEAC Defensive Player of the Year twice.
NFL
Leonard was selected by the Indianapolis Colts as the 36th player and fifth linebacker in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft .
In his rookie season, he moved into the play-offs with the Colts and had a total of 163 tackles, scoring the most tackles of the 2018 season . There were also seven sacks, two interceptions and four forced fumbles. Because of his achievements, he was named twice AFC Defensive Player of the Week and once AFC Defensive Player of the Month as well as an All-Pro player. He is also one of the finalists for the Butkus Award , which is given annually to the best linebacker in high school, college and in the NFL.
Following his rookie season, Leonard was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press .
Due to a concussion, he missed three games of the 2019 season before returning to play from week 7. He was first elected to the Pro Bowl on December 17, 2019 .
