Professional career
Stanton entered the NFL Draft in 2007 and was selected 43rd by the Detroit Lions in the second round. He should slowly build up behind Jon Kitna and his backup and become the future quarterback of the Lions. Following Kitna's injury in the 2008 season, Stanton became backup quarterback behind Dan Orlovsky for the remainder of the season. Since the Lions ended the season with zero wins and 16 defeats as the worst team in the NFL, all decision-makers were exchanged in Detroit and the aim was to rebuild the team. The whole roster was almost completely replaced, but Stanton stayed in Detroit, although Matthew Stafford and Daunte Culpepper had been set as quarterbacks No. 1 and 2, with whom one wanted to go into the season. Stanton became third quarterback again. In week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers , Stanton made his first game as a starter . However, he could not convince and was exchanged for Culpepper in the fourth quarter.
On March 16, 2012, Stanton signed a one-year contract with the New York Jets .
Due to the commitment of Tim Tebow , he was handed over to the Indianapolis Colts a week later for a six-round draft pick. After playing there for a year, he moved to the Arizona Cardinals on March 13, 2013 , where he signed a three-year contract.
After the 2017 season, in which he was the backup quarterback behind Carson Palmer for the Arizona Cardinals, he became a free agent when his contract expired . He then joined the Cleveland Browns and was given a two-year contract.
