Career

Culpepper was born in prison and raised by his foster mother, Emma Culpepper. He studied and played at the University of Central Florida and was selected in 1999 as the eleventh player in the first round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings for the NFL.

The three-time Pro Bowl participant (2000, 2003, 2004) was considered one of the best active quarterbacks in the NFL before he sustained a serious knee injury in 2005. In the 2004 NFL season he broke z. B. the Vikings team record in touchdown passes (39 versus 34 by Randall Cunningham in 1998) and he threw the most yards (4,717).

After Culpepper had played for the Minnesota Vikings from 1999 to 2005, he was handed over to the Miami Dolphins in 2006 against draft picks . For the 2007 NFL season, he finally moved to the Oakland Raiders , who did not extend his one-year contract at the end of the season. In November 2008, Culpepper joined the Detroit Lions , despite having announced his retirement from professional sports in September. Notice of withdrawal

On September 4, 2008, Culpepper announced his retirement from professional football in an open letter to the media. After being unable to find a new employer in the run-up to the 2008 season, he decided to end his career. Culpepper had represented himself to the teams since 2006 instead of hiring an agent as usual. In his resignation letter, he cited this as the main reason for his persistent unemployment: "I understand now why the NFL doesn't like to see a player get to know the business side of the league. The NFL is increasingly about power these days , Money and control instead of passion for the game. " This resignation was short-lived, however, in November 2008 Daunte Culpepper signed a contract with the Detroit Lions .
