The 2004 MAC Football Championship Game was the final of the American football championship in the Mid-American Conference of the 2004 season. The East Division winner, the Miami RedHawks , met the West Division winner, the Toledo Rockets . The Rockets defeated the RedHawks 35:27. The game took place on December 2, 2004 at Ford Field in Detroit , Michigan . It was the first championship game on neutral ground.
Course of the game
The championship game started badly for Toledo, as their quarterback dislocated his shoulder on the first drive. But he only missed one play due to the injury. Late in the second quarter he broke his throwing hand, but continued to play. At halftime, the Rockets were down 7:14, but were able to turn the game down to 35:20 with three touchdowns in the third quarter and another in the early last quarter. Toledo scored the equalizing touchdown after Brett's first interception , while Strong Safety Jackson scored the leading touchdown with a pick six. Miami then managed to score a touchdown, but the extra point was blocked by Anthony Jordan and so the Rockets stayed in the lead. The Rockets managed to throw a touchdown on Moore in their next two drives. Miami reduced the deficit to eight points with a touchdown with four minutes remaining, but the Rockets managed to take the remaining time off the clock with two 3rd down conversions and thus secure victory.
