Kern attended the University of Toledo and played for their team, the Rockets , as a punter college football from 2004 to 2007 . In his first season he scored 40.6 yards per punt. Only 18 of his 44 punts were carried back, with twelve placed Kern within the 20 yard line. However, due to an injury, he missed two games. In 2005 he had an average of 39.5 yards per punt. He also threw a pass at a fake punt twice, completing one of them for 34 yards and a new first try. As a junior , he had an average of 41.7 yards per punt, with his longest punt going over 69 yards. Kern placed 21 of the 60 points within the 20-yard line.
His best year was the 2007 season when he was a finalist for the Ray Guy Award and was voted third-team All-American . His punt average of 46.1 yards per punt was the nation's second best, earning him the MAC Special Team Player of the Year title . His career average was 42.3 yards per punt. For the 100th anniversary of the Rockets in 2017, Kern was voted 31st in the all-century team.
NFL
Denver Broncos
He was not considered in the 2008 NFL Draft , but was signed on April 28, 2008 by the Denver Broncos as an Undrafted Free Agent . In the pre-season he was able to prevail against his opponent Sam Paulescu and was already the only punter in his rookie season . With 46.7 yards per punt he was able to show the second best value and with 37.8 net yards (gain of space after deduction of returns and touchbacks) per punt the ninth best value of the American Football Conference (AFC). He was elected to the all-rookie team for his achievements.
Also in 2009 Kern was the punter and holder of the Broncos. They were, however , dissatisfied with Kern's inconsistency in directional punting and his preference for long, low punts that were ideal to return to . He finished tenth in the NFL with 46.1 yards per punt after a punt was carried back by Darren Sproles in the game against the San Diego Chargers for a touchdown , but with 34.5 yards per punt only 27th place for net yards. Kern also caused six touchbacks with only 27 punts , but also placed nine within the 20-yard line. He was released from the Broncos on October 26, 2009 after only 6 games.
Tennessee Titans
Kern was signed by the Tennessee Titans the following day and was used in all ten games of the season. He punted 37 times for 1,665 yards, placing 18 punts within the opponent's first 20 yards. In 2010 he played all 16 games for the Titans for the first time. He kicked 77 punts for 3,302 yards and a net cut of 39.6 yards per punt, which was the fifth best value in the AFC. In February 2011, the Titans extended Kern's contract for several years.
In 2012 he broke the franchise record for net yards per punt for the first time and then broke this record again in 2014. Also in 2014, he broke another franchise record with a 79-yard punt against the Indianapolis Colts . 28 of his total of 88 punts ended up within the first 20 opposing yards. In March 2015, he was awarded a five-year contract for $ 15 million. In 2016 , Kern became the first punter in NFL history to shoot more than 80 punts, causing fewer than two touchbacks and a net average of over 40 yards per punt.
In 2017, he had his best season to date when he punted an average of 49.7 yards and punted for 44.6 yards net. Both broke the franchise records he had held, and at Nettoyards he has held the top six in franchise history ever since. His net worth was the second best in NFL history and his gross worth was the eighth best. For these achievements he was appointed to the Pro Bowl for the first time and was elected to the second-team All-Pro . At the beginning of the 2017 season , Kern broke another record in the game against the Miami Dolphins when he became the first NFL punter to punt at least ten times in a game with a net average of over 50 yards per punt.
In 2018 he was reappointed to the Pro Bowl. This happened after a season in which Kern averaged 47.1 yards per punt gross and 41.7 yards per punt net. He placed 39 punts within the opponent's first 20 yards and only caused three touchbacks. In March 2019, the Titans extended his contract for another four years, although his existing contract would have run for another season. The contract extension was valued at $ 12.55 million, including $ 2.2 million as a signature bonus.
In 2019 he was able to achieve the best value in the league with 37 points within the 20. For this he was elected to the First-Team All-Pro . He was also elected to the Pro Bowl .
