The Ray Guy Award is a prize awarded by the Augusta Sports Council since 2000 for the best punter in college football . It is named after punter Ray Guy , a former University of Southern Mississippi player .
The winner will be determined by the Football Bowl Subdivision coaches , sports information directors, media representatives, and former Ray Guy Award winners from an organization-determined list of candidates. According to the CEO of the Augusta Sports Council, the four main criteria for a nomination are the percentage of punts not returned , the average space gained by the punt returner , the average net space gained (puntete yards - returned yards) and the number of punts that are within the opponent's red zone ended. In a first ballot, a group of 3 finalists is selected from the candidates, from which the winner is then determined in the second ballot.
