The Florida Gators are a college football team based in Gainesville that represents the University of Florida . The Gators' home games are played in the 88,548-seat Ben Hill Griffin Stadium . The team plays in Division I of the Southeastern Conference .
history
The team began playing in September 1906 when the new university campus opened in Gainesville . In 1912, the Gators then joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) , in which they participated until 1922 when they joined the Southern Conference . However, the Gators were not members of this for long either. In 1933 they joined the newly formed Southeastern Conference , of which they are still a member today.
