The Bangabandhu National Stadium ( Bengali বঙ্গবন্ধু ন্যাশনাল ষ্টেডিয়াম baṅgabandhu nyāśnāl ṣṭeḍiẏām ) is located in the city center of Dhaka , the capital of Bangladesh .
history
The 36,000-seat National Stadium, also known as Number 1 National Stadium or Dhaka Stadium , bears its official name in honor of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman . In connection with the war of independence in 1971, Mujibur Rahman is regarded by Pakistan as the so-called father of the nation and is commonly referred to as Bangabandhu (German: "Friend of Bengal"). It opened in 1954. In 1998 the facility was renovated.
use
Until March 1, 2005, it was the home ground of the Bangladesh national cricket team . The stadium, which looks more like a shopping center from the outside due to the numerous shops , was only used for football matches for a long time. On April 19, 2011, the national athletics championships took place here. Olympian Beauty Nazmun Nahar was also there .
