Victoria Lucy Esson (born March 6, 1991 in Christchurch ) is a New Zealand soccer goalkeeper and current "number 2" in the goal of the New Zealand women's national team . She has played in the top series for Avaldsnes IL since 2019 .

Career

Esson started at the local club Halswell United when he was 10. She initially played in defense. From 2011 she attended Burnside High School in Christchurch and played for their team in school tournaments. From 2011 she attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock and played successfully for their Red Raiders in the Big 12 Conference and set several team and conference records. From 2014 she played the New Zealand champions for Mainland Pride in the National Women's League. She took over the captain's armband from her predecessor and won the New Zealand championship in her first year.

She played for Canterbury United Pride during the 2017-18 season.

Since the 2019 season she has been playing in the top series for the Norwegian club Avaldsnes IL .

National team

At the end of October / beginning of November 2008 she took part with the U-17s in the first U-17 women's soccer world championship , which took place in her home country. She was there in goal in the three group games. She did not concede in any game and was eliminated with her team third in the group.

A few days later, at the age of 17, she took part in the 2008 U-20 Women's World Cup in Chile , but had to let Charlotte Wood go first.

In January 2010, she and the U-20 team won the 2010 U-20 Oceania Women's Soccer Championship in her native New Zealand. She was in the three games against American Samoa, the Cook Islands and Tonga in goal and remained clean. The team thus qualified for the 2010 Women's U-20 World Cup . She traveled to the World Cup as "number 1", but had to give way to the current "number 1" in the goal of the senior national team , which was then also in the goal at the 2012 U-20 Oceania women's championship .

Esson first played for the senior team against Thailand on November 28, 2017 . She came on in the 80th minute for Anna Leat . In her third international match on November 22, 2018, she played over 90 minutes for the first time. She was in goal in the 6-0 win against the Cook Islands in the second group game of the 2018 Oceania Women's Soccer Championship . As tournament winners, the New Zealanders qualified for the 2019 World Cup and the 2020 Olympic Games .

At the end of February / beginning of March she was part of the squad that took part in the Cup of Nations , but was not used there. On April 29, she was nominated for the World Cup in France . At the World Cup, where the New Zealanders were eliminated after the group stage, it was not used.
