Hebdomon
Hebdomon was a suburb of Constantinople , from where the Via Egnatia led through the Golden Gate over the Mese and the Imperial Forum to the Grand Palace . The place was on the seventh milestone before Constantinople, counted from the Milion at the Sophienkirche, which is why the area was known under the name Hebdomon or Septimo (Greek or Latin for "seventh"). It was here that the Byzantine emperors were traditionally proclaimed by the army.
The churches of John the Baptist , in which John's head was kept, and of the Apostle John from the 5th century were also located here. The remains of the Hebdomon cistern have been preserved.
Today the Bakırköy district of Istanbul is located in the same place .
