Yeşilköy ( Turkish for Gründorf ) is a district of Bakırköy in the greater Istanbul area .

It is located about eleven kilometers west of the old town of Istanbul on the coast of the Marmara Sea . Before the population explosion in Istanbul in the 1970s, Yeşilköy was a village and a small health resort .

history

Yeşilköy was called San Stefano until 1926 , from the Greek: Άγιος Στέφανος (pronounced Ayos Stefanos , German St. Stephanus ), assimilated into Turkish as Ayastefanos , in Bulgarian Сан Стефано .

In 1203 a Catholic army reached the coast of San Stefano on the Fourth Crusade , a year later the Orthodox Constantinople was conquered and Ayos Stefanos became part of the Latin Empire .

French forces were stationed here during the Crimean War . They built a lighthouse at the harbor that is still there today. This is the place where the Russians stopped their advance during the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878) and then signed the San Stefano Treaty on March 3, 1878 .

In 1912, during the Balkan War , thousands of Ottoman soldiers fell ill with cholera and were brought to San Stefano. Over 3,000 of them died and were buried near the place. At the beginning of the 20th century, the place had a predominantly Christian population consisting of Greeks and Armenians. The village got its current name Yeşilköy (Green Village) in the first years after the founding of the republic.

Today, Istanbul Ataturk Airport is located in Yeşilköy . The Parseval airship PL 9 was stationed here as early as 1913 .

Under its old name, the place has given its name to San Stefano Peak , the highest mountain on Rugged Island in Antarctica, since 2006
