Cem Karaca (born April 5, 1945 in the Istanbul district of Bakırköy , † February 8, 2004 in Istanbul) was a Turkish rock musician and a representative of the Anadolu rock movement.

Life

Cem Karaca was the only son of İrma Felegyan (stage name: Toto Karaca), a theater and film actress of Armenian descent, and the Azerbaijani Mehmet İbrahim Karaca. After initially playing in cover bands, he founded his first Turkish-language band, Apaşlar, in 1967. In 1972 he became a member of the Moğollar group . After Moğollar broke up, he founded Dervişan.

He was accused of inciting the population against the government with his songs. After the 1980 military coup , an arrest warrant was issued against him and he was expatriated. Therefore, since 1979 Karaca lived in exile in the Federal Republic of Germany , namely in Cologne . He also sang in German, first from autumn 1980 a poem by Nâzım Hikmet - Kiz Cocugu (Turkish spelling: Kız Çocuğu , title in You are afraid of our songs : Little Dead Girl ): Karaca alternately interpreted the German-language stanzas on the piano with his friend, manager, arranger and band leader / musician Ralf Mähnhöfer , who sang the Turkish version of the song in a duet with guitarists Fehiman Uğurdemir and Paul Shigihara or accompanied by the band Anatology .

It was not until 1987 that Cem Karaca was given an amnesty by the then Turkish Prime Minister Turgut Özal and was able to return to his homeland.

Regarding his work in German exile, his German-language album Die Kanaken , published in 1984, is remarkable, in which he primarily addressed the situation of Turkish guest workers and immigrants in Germany with songs such as Mein Deutscher Freund or Es haben Menschen An . Also worth mentioning is the film music that he wrote a year earlier for the WDR television series Our Neighbors, which Baltas broadcast on German television .

In 2006 the album Mutlaka Yavrum came out. It was produced in honor of Cem Karaca. It features songs by Cem Karaca, which have been interpreted by other musicians such as Haluk Levent , Teoman Yakupoğlu , Edip Akbayram and the band maNga .

In 2007, in the district of Bakırköy in Istanbul a public cultural center (auditorium with 460 seats) opened that bears his honor the name Cem Karaca Kültür Merkezi and where exhibited in a glass case, some belonging to the musician objects.
