history

The Armenian Private School of Pangaltı was founded in 1811 in the Kandilli district of what was then the Üsküdar district , in the Asian part of Istanbul. It was closed by the Ottoman government in 1816 . The grammar school was then re-established in 1825 in what was then Pera (today Beyoğlu ), in the Thracian (European) part of what was then Istanbul, by a monastic mechitarist order . After reopening, the school continued its work within a mechitaristic monastery in Pera until 1866, when it was moved to its current location. Today the school operates under the direction of the Ministry of National Education and is subject to the same regulations as the other public and private schools, but at the same time tries to serve the needs of the Armenian community in Istanbul .
