Vanua Vatu [ βaˈnua βatu ] is an island of volcanic origin in the center of the Lau Archipelago in the Pacific Ocean . Politically, it belongs to the Eastern Division of the island state of Fiji .

Vanua Vatu is comparatively isolated in the Koro Sea , around 55 km west of Lakeba , the main island of the archipelago, 65 km southwest of Nayau , and 70 km south of Cicia . The approximately square island has a length of 2.2 km, a width of 2 km and an area of ​​about 3.5 km². It is completely surrounded by a coral reef , densely forested and reaches a height of 92 m above sea level. The island is inhabited and has only one village with Vanuavatu , which belongs to the traditional district ( Tikina ) of the island of Totoya , 82 km to the southwest.
