Sergei Aschwanden (born December 22, 1975 in Bern ) is a Swiss judoka and holder of the 6th Dan.

Life

The son of a Swiss father and a Kenyan mother spent the first seven years of his life in Bern. Since then he has lived in Bussigny-près-Lausanne .

His greatest successes include the European championship titles in 2000 and 2003, the 2003 World Cup silver medal, 3rd place at the 2001 World Championships and the bronze medal at the 2008 Olympic Games. He won the Swiss championship eight times, including six titles the elite.

His first participation in the Summer Olympics was in Sydney in 2000 , but where he was eliminated in the first round against the eventual bronze winner Aleksei Budõlin . At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens he was in the light middleweight category (up to 81 kg) as a possible hope for a medal, but then surprisingly dropped out again in the first round. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , he competed in the middleweight division (up to 90 kg) again for Switzerland and won the bronze medal. His coach was Leo Held , who was voted Swiss Coach of the Year 2008 due to Aschwanden's success . Aschwanden himself was nominated for Sportsman of the Year and came fourth in the poll.
