Alim Schalauatowitsch Gadanow ( Russian Алим Шалауатович Гаданов ; born October 20, 1983 in Nalchik ) is a former judoka who competed for Russia . He was European champion in 2012, won three bronze medals at European championships and was fifth in the 2008 Olympics.

Athletic career

The 1.65 m tall Alim Gadanow fought until 2014 in the half-light weight, the weight class up to 66 kilograms. In 2005 he was runner-up in the U23 European Championships. In 2006 Gadanov won the title at the Russian championships. In 2007 he won the Super World Cup in Rotterdam. In early 2008 he took third place at the Tournoi de Paris . At the European Championships in Lisbon he was defeated in the quarterfinals by the French Sébastien Berthelot ; with two wins in the round of hope he reached the battle for a bronze medal, which he won against the Dutchman Dex Elmont . He also lost in the quarter-finals to a Frenchman at the Olympic Games in Beijing , this time Benjamin Darbelet . With two wins in the round of hope he reached the battle for bronze again, in Beijing he was defeated by the Cuban Yordanis Arencibia .

At the 2009 European Championships in Tbilisi , he defeated Sébastien Berthelot in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals he was defeated by the Hungarian Miklós Ungvári , the battle for bronze he won against the Armenian Armen Nazarjan . In July 2009 Gadanow won the Grand Slam tournament in Rio de Janeiro , where he defeated the Mongol Chaschbaataryn Tsagaanbaatar in the final . At the 2009 World Championships in Rotterdam he was defeated by Chaschbaataryn Tsagaanbaatar in the semifinals, Gadanaow lost the battle for bronze against the South Korean An Jeong-hwan . In 2010 Gadanow repeated his victory in the Grand Slam in Rio de Janeiro, this time defeating the Italian Elio Verde in the final . At the 2010 World Championships in Tokyo, he was defeated by the Spaniard Sugoi Uriarte in the quarter-finals and finished in seventh place.

2011 Gadanow again reached the semi-finals at the European Championships in Istanbul . He lost to Miklós Ungvári, he won the battle for bronze against his compatriot Musa Moguschkow . A month later, Gadanow won the Grand Slam tournament in Moscow with a final victory over Poland's Tomasz Kowalski . At the World Championships in Paris he was eliminated in his third fight against the French David Larose . In 2012 at the European Championships in Chelyabinsk , he won the semi-finals against Miklós Ungvári and in the final against Tomasz Kowalski. At the 2012 Olympic Games, Russia was represented by Musa Moguschkow.

Gadanow was internationally active in the light weight division until 2014, followed by two years in the light weight division. He was unable to continue his great successes after 2012.
