Hans-Joachim Ketelsen

Hans-Joachim Ketelsen (born February 17, 1945 in Altenburg in Thuringia ) is a German opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

Childhood and youth

Hans-Joachim Ketelsen's parents come from Görlitz . In February 1945, the mother fled from the approaching front. Hans-Joachim Ketelsen was therefore born in Altenburg in Thuringia and spent the end of the war with his mother on a farm in Uhlmannsdorf . After the end of the war he returned to Görlitz. The father did not return from captivity until the end of 1946. Hans-Joachim Ketelsen grew up in Görlitz. Hans-Joachim attended today's Melanchthon School in Görlitz. After graduating, he trained as a bricklayer.

The family name Ketelsen goes back to ancestors in North Friesland .

Career

In the early 1960s, Hans-Joachim Ketelsen moved to Dresden , where he married in 1965. The marriage produced a son and a daughter.

At that time, Ketelsen was a member of the “Ensemble of Young Talents” in the youth club “Martin Andersen Nexö” (today: Kulturzentrum Scheune) in Dresden, where he was already receiving singing lessons.

While working as a professional driver at VEB Kraftverkehr Dresden, Hans-Joachim Ketelsen studied classical singing in an evening course at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden . Ketelsen was u. a. Student of Arno Schellenberg and Johannes Kemter.

Hans-Joachim Ketelsen debuted in 1973 at the City Theater Freiberg as Graf von Eberbach in The Poacher by Albert Lortzing . Through the Städtische Theater Karl-Marx-Stadt (today Theater Chemnitz) from 1976 to 1982 his path led in 1982 to the Dresden State Opera (Semperoper) . From 1982 to 1993 he appeared as a permanent guest at the Berlin State Opera . On February 13, 1985 he took part in the opening of the new Semperoper Dresden as Prince Ottokar in Der Freischütz by Carl Maria von Weber . Also in 1985 he was appointed chamber singer of the Semperoper. From 1990 he appeared as a guest in many theaters around the world.

His extensive repertoire mainly includes roles from operas by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss , but also by Giacomo Puccini and Giuseppe Verdi .

On December 10, 2013, Hans-Joachim Ketelsen ended his international career as a faninal in Der Rosenkavalier at the Metropolitan Opera New York. Nevertheless, since the end of 2015 he has appeared again in supporting roles at the Dresden State Opera and at the Dresden State Operetta.
