The Triathlon of women in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens took place on 25 August 2004 at the Vouliagmeni Olympic Center instead.

The race started with a 1.5 kilometer swim in the Mediterranean Sea at a water temperature of 26 ° C. After swimming, I switched to the bike, with which a circuit had to be passed five times. The athletes had to cover a total of 40 kilometers. At the end there was a 10 km run.

Course of the competition

After swimming, the Australian Loretta Harrop was the first to switch to the bike, the later Olympic champion Kate Allen was almost two minutes behind . But after the first of five laps on the very demanding bike course, with a 20 percent gradient, the Austrian was able to reduce the gap to third place to 90 seconds. Thanks to a good cooperation with other athletes in her chasing group, she came out of the transition area in 29th place. Despite the outside temperature of over 30 ° C, the Austrian was able to make up time very quickly and was only about ten seconds behind the third-placed driver before the last of the three laps. She fought her way position by position past her rivals and came in second around the last bend into the finish stadium. In the finish sprint, she took the leader Harrop 6.72 seconds away and secured the Olympic victory with this race to catch up. American Susan Williams won the bronze medal .
