Karl-Heinz Schmidt (hockey player)

Karl-Heinz "Zam" Schmidt (born April 24, 1928 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ; † November 8, 1999 in Günzburg ) was a German hockey player . He won an Olympic bronze medal in 1956.

As the goalkeeper of the German national hockey team, "Zam" Schmidt took part in both the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki and the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. He played a total of 16 international matches. With his hometown club HTC Uhlenhorst Mülheim , he was German field hockey champion in 1950, 1954, 1955, 1957, 1958 and 1960. His nickname “Zam” goes back to the Spanish soccer goalkeeper Ricardo Zamora , who was considered one of the world's best goalkeepers in the 1920s and 1930s.
