Bill Baillie

William David "Bill" Baillie (born May 28, 1934 in Nelson ; † December 25, 2018 ) was a New Zealand middle and long distance runner .

Career

At the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver in 1954 , he was fourth over 880 yards and seventh in the mile run. In 1958 in Cardiff he was ninth over three miles and retired over a mile in the lead, in 1962 in Perth he did not reach the goal over six miles.

On August 24, 1963, in Auckland , he broke Emil Zátopek's almost twelve-year-old world records over 20,000 m and in the hour .

In 1964 he was sixth at the Olympic Games in Tokyo over 5000 m and in 1966 at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston ninth over six miles.

He was seven times New Zealand champion over six miles (1959, 1960, 1963-1967), twice over 880 yards (1954, 1955), one mile (1958, 1961) and in cross country (1960, 1963) as well as once over three miles (1956) and in the 10-mile road race (1965). In 1958 and 1959 he set two national records in the marathon in Auckland with 2:23:41 h and 2:20:13 h respectively . In 1963 he was Japanese champion over 5000 m, 1964 Australian champion over three miles.

Bill Baillie was trained by Arthur Lydiard . In 2011 he was inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame .
