Bill Crothers

Bill Crothers (actually William Frederick Crothers ; born December 24, 1940 in Markham , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian middle-distance runner and sprinter .

At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, he won the 800 m in his personal best of 1: 45.6 min, the silver medal behind New Zealander Peter Snell (1: 45.1 min) and ahead of Kenyan Wilson Kiprugut (1: 45.9 min). He reached the semi-finals over 400 m .

The following year he won the 800 m Universiade . In 1966 he was fifth over 440 yards and fourth over 440 yards at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston . In the 4 x 440 yards relay, he won silver with the Canadian team.

He also won silver at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg in 1967 over 800 meters and in the 4-by-400-meter relay .

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, he retired with the Canadian quartet in the run-up to the 4-by-400-meter relay.

From 1961 to 1967 he was Canadian champion seven times in a row over 800 m or 880 yards. In 1961, 1962 and 1965 he was also national champion over 440 yards. In 1963 he was US champion and in 1964 English champion over 880 yards. In the hall he won the US title in 1962 over 600 yards and in 1963 over 1000 yards, the English title in 1963 and 1964 over 600 yards and 1963 over 1000 yards.
