Galina Mikhailovna Popova

Galina Mikhailovna Popova ( Russian Галина Михайловна Попова ., English transcription Galina Popova, born Виноградова - Vinogradova - Vinogradova; * 2. June 1932 in Moscow ) is a former Russian sprinter and long jumper who for the Soviet Union started.

In the long jump she was fifth at the European Athletics Championships in 1954 and won the World Festival of Youth and Students in 1955. On September 11, she set a world record in Moscow with 6.28 m , which she did on November 18 at the Soviet Championships 6.31 m improved.

Over 100 m she reached the semi-finals at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. In 1957 she won bronze at the World Festival of Youth and Students and silver at the World University Games. At the Universiade in 1961, silver followed over the same distance.

At the EM in 1962 in Belgrade, she was eliminated over 100 m in the semifinals and was disqualified with the Soviet team in the final of the 4 x 100 meter relay .

In 1964 she reached the semi-finals again at the Olympic Games in Tokyo over 100 m and was fourth in the 4 x 100 meter relay .

She was four times Soviet champion over 100 m (1955, 1956, 1959, 1964), twice over 200 m (1959, 1963) and once in the long jump (1955).
