Dyrol Burleson

Dyrol Burleson ( Dyrol Jay Burleson; born April 27, 1940 in Saginaw , Michigan ) is a former American middle -distance runner who specialized in the 1,500-meter distance . While in high school when he was coached by Sam Bell , he ran the two American high school records over a mile that was only beaten by Jim Ryun .

After high school, he accepted an athletic scholarship to the University of Oregon and continued his training with Bill Bowerman .

In 1959 he won the Pan American Games in Chicago , in 1960 he was sixth at the Olympic Games in Rome and in 1964 he was fifth at the Olympic Games in Tokyo .

He was three times US champion over 1500 m or in the mile run (1959, 1961, 1963) and for the University of Oregon starting from 1960 to 1962 three times in a row NCAA champion over 1500 m or one mile.

After the end of his successful sporting career, he retired to the local rural Cottage Grove (Oregon) , where he successfully breeds goats , llamas and alpacas .
