In 1988 the son of a teacher met development workers on a motorcycle tour through Mali and helped build a school. After successfully developing a vocational training center in Uganda, he switched to United Nations emergency aid.

Subsequently, he worked for the United Nations and its aid agencies in various crisis regions around the world.

In 1991 he worked for the UN World Food Program in South Sudan and witnessed the “ Bor massacre ”. After the “Lost Boys of South Sudan” escaped to Kenya, he helped build the Kakuma refugee camp for UNHCR, which still exists today.

He was then sent to Somalia by UNHCR , from where he headed the Mogadishu office during the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu . In 1994 he coordinated the “Displaced Persons Program” in Kenya. After deployments in Bosnia (1995–1997) and Sri Lanka, he was the coordinator of a rescue operation for 100,000 refugees from Rwanda during the Second Congo War and organized the airlift from Kisangani to Rwanda. From 1999-2000 he coordinated the UNHCR's field operations in the Congo. From 2001 to 2004 he was the coordinator of the migration and refugee initiative of the Stability Pact for Southeast Europe and established the MARRI Center in Skopje with Soren Jessen-Petersen . From 2013 to 2014 Kleinschmidt was head of the Zaatari refugee camp and within a year managed to build a settlement that made human dignity and quality of life possible. His plan was to turn the camp into a city. Instead of serving food, supermarkets have been set up in which refugees have been able to shop with tokens since 2014. With the help of the City of Amsterdam, the planning was adapted to urban development standards. In 2014 he decided to leave the United Nations in order to develop and implement innovative concepts. Kleinschmidt developed the “Sustainable Development Zones” model in collaboration with Joachim Rücker and Michael Castle-Miller.

In 2014 he founded the startup Innovation & Planning Agency Switxboard . Kleinschmidt believes that the agile networking of global resources will replace the model of development cooperation and that large institutions and aid organizations will be a thing of the past. IUMEE - United Resources , founded in 2019 as a new venture, continues this approach and plans a global analog network structure supported by digitization and AI. The Bridging With Sports GmbH provides expertise in sports development.
