Zaatari (also Saatari , Arabic مخيم الزعتري, DMG Muḫayyam az-Zaʿtarī ) is a refugee camp in northern Jordan , about 10 km east of Mafraq and six kilometers south of the Syrian border. It is one of the world's largest refugee camps and is developing into a permanent settlement; for example, there is a main street with market stalls and shops, called “ Champs-Élysées ”. It is now Jordan's fourth largest city.

Since July 2012, people have found refuge there from the civil war in Syria ; It is estimated that the camp has around 79,000 residents. The United Nations Refugee Agency UNHCR is responsible ; The head of the settlement was the German development aid worker Kilian Kleinschmidt . One of his self-imposed tasks is to determine districts and assign street names so that every refugee has a unique address.

Numerous aid organizations such as Doctors Without Borders are active in Zaatari ; Schools were built, a soccer field laid out. The German technical aid organization took care of communal kitchens, sewage and toilets with over 100 employees.

The cost of the refugee camp is around $ 500,000 a day.
