Bernardo Segura Rivera (born February 11, 1970 in San Mateo Atenco , Mexico ) is a Mexican athlete . At a height of 1.75 m, his competition weight is 62 kg.

On May 7, 1994, Bernardo Segura set a world record in the 20,000-meter track walking in Fana, Norway, with a time of 1:17: 25.6 hours, which was still held in 2006. Segura is one of the few walkers whose best time on the track is better than on the road.

In international competitions in 20 km street walking , Bernardo Segura's track record is mixed. He never crossed the finish line in a total of five world championships. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , Segura finished third in 1:20:23 hours, 16 seconds behind the winner Jefferson Pérez from Ecuador and 7 seconds behind Ilya Markow from Russia.

After a victory at the Pan American Games in 1999 , his greatest triumph at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney should follow. He fought a thrilling duel with the Pole Robert Korzeniowski and won by a narrow margin over the Pole. Then Segura went on the lap of honor with the Mexican flag . After this lap of honor, the Mexican president congratulated him on his Olympic victory over the phone, while at the same time in the stadium the disqualification of Segura due to unclean gait was announced.

It was only because of this disqualification that Robert Korzeniowski became the first walker to achieve an Olympic victory in both 20 km and 50 km walking . And the IAAF, the World Athletics Association, discussed whether walking should be removed from the program because of questionable judges' decisions. It was agreed that judges should never again make a disqualification afterwards or even on the home straight. Bernardo Segura, the Olympic champion for a quarter of an hour, was of little use. Even after 2000, his track record remained modest. A second place at the Pan-American Games 2003 are disqualified at most of the major championships, as well as the abandonment at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens . He was trained by Jerzy Hausleber .

Others

Bernardo Segura named his son Jefferson Daniel Segura after the Olympic champions in 1992 Daniel Plaza and 1996 Jefferson Pérez.
