Tetrahydrogestrinone (THG), also called The Clear , is a designer steroid and belongs to the group of anabolic steroids . THG is a modified gestrinone and shows affinity for the androgen receptor and progesterone receptor , but not for the estrogen receptor.

The substance was specially developed for doping purposes , medical effects are not known, GHG is not approved as a drug. There are still no scientific studies on the effects of GHG, so it cannot be said exactly what effects and side effects the substance has. It is assumed that these are comparable to gestrinone and that the substance has little or no anabolic effect. In combination with the growth hormone somatotropin , however, better and faster regeneration should be achieved.

Chemically it is related to the anabolic steroids gestrinone and trenbolone . It is produced by reducing the CC triple bond of gestrinone linked to C17.

According to previous knowledge, THG was developed by the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative headed by Victor Conte . The United States Anti-Doping Agency was anonymously leaked a sample in the form of a used syringe through star trainer Trevor Graham . This enabled the substance to be analyzed and identified for the first time. As a result, the substance was first detected in 2003 in an A-sample ( urine sample ) from an athlete.

In 2004, THG was not yet on the doping list of WADA or the IOC . However, it is banned because it falls under the anabolic steroids.

Because of the use of GHG, a. banned sprinters Dwain Chambers , Marion Jones and Kelli White , middle-distance runner Regina Jacobs , shot putter Kevin Toth and hammer thrower John McEwen .
