Dame Valerie Kasanita Adams , DNZM (born October 6, 1984 in Rotorua ) is a New Zealand athlete . She is a two-time Olympic champion and four-time world champion in the shot put .

Athletic career

Adams began competitive sports at the age of 14. Even as a junior she was one of the strongest shot putters in her country. At the age of 16 she became New Zealand Champion for the first time in 2001, in the same year she became World Youth Champion. In 2002 she won the title at the Junior World Championships in Kingston and won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester .

In 2003 she took part in the World Championships in Paris / Saint-Denis and was fifth in the shot put with a distance of 18.65 m. In the following year she also reached the final at the Olympic Games in Athens and finished eighth with 18.56 m at the end of the competition.

At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , Adams finished third with a width of 19.62 m. In 2006 she won the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne with 19.66 m. A year later she won the gold medal at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka. In the last round of the competition, she achieved a width of 20.54 m and pushed the Belarusian Nadseja Astaptschuk into second place. With this title she managed to win the world championship in the youth, junior and senior division (previously only Jana Pittman 2003, Jelena Issinbajewa 2005 and Veronica Campbell 2007). At the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, she successfully defended her title with a width of 20.44 m. Two years later she repeated her success. With a width of 21.24 m, she won her third gold medal in world championships at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea . At the World Championships in Moscow in 2013 , she won the title again with a width of 20.88 m, making her the most successful shot putter at world championships.

The 2008 Olympic year began for Valerie Adams with the title win at the World Indoor Championships 2008 in Valencia. In the summer she celebrated her greatest success. With a width of 20.56 m she was Olympic champion in the shot put at the Olympic Games in Beijing . Valerie Adams was the first woman since Yvette Williams in 1952 to win an Olympic gold medal in athletics for New Zealand. Valerie Adams was also a gold medalist in the shot put at the 2012 Olympic Games in London; Although the Belarusian Nadseja Astaptschuk pushed 66 cm further, she was disqualified because of two positive doping tests.

By 2007 she was seven times New Zealand champion in the shot put. She also became the national hammer throw champion in 2003 and discus throw in 2004 . In 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016 she won the overall ranking of the Diamond League five times .

Adams was undefeated for five years and 56 competitions. After a shoulder operation, she was defeated for the first time by Christina Schwanitz in 2015 .

At a height of 1.93 m, her competition weight is 120 kg. She is trained in Switzerland by Jean-Pierre Egger and Werner Günthör .

Adams is of Tongan on his mother's side and Scottish on his father's side . She was married to the New Caledonian discus thrower Bertrand Vili for a few years . At the World Championships in 2005, 2007 and 2009 she started under the name Valerie Vili, in 2010 she got divorced and has since returned under her maiden name. Valerie Adams has 17 siblings, including basketball player Steven Adams , who currently plays in the NBA for the Oklahoma City Thunder .
