Bronwyn Thompson (athlete)

Bronwyn Lee Thompson ( Bronwyn Lee Thompson-Chipperfield ; born January 29, 1978 in Rockhampton ) is a former Australian athlete who specializes in the long jump . She won the 2006 Commonwealth Games in the long jump.

Thompson first jumped the six-meter mark in 1994. After she was not nominated for the Junior World Championships in 1996, she ended her career and devoted herself to training as a physiotherapist.

In 2000 she returned to athletics and qualified for the Australian Olympic team at the Sydney Olympics . There she jumped 6.55 meters in qualification and missed the final. In 2001 she improved Nicole Boegman's Australian national record to 6.88 meters. On March 7, 2002, she jumped the current Oceania record in Melbourne with 7.00 meters (as of 2009). At the Commonwealth Games 2002 she finished sixth with 6.38 meters, eleven centimeters behind the bronze medal. In 2003 she defended her Australian championship title, at the 2003 World Championships she finished seventh with 6.48 meters. At the 2004 Olympicsshe managed a jump to 6.96 meters, with which she reached fourth place, eleven centimeters were missing from the gold medal, which went to the Russian Tatyana Lebedeva .

Shortly after the Olympics, Bronwyn Thompson seriously injured his knee. In 2006, she returned to world class when she jumped 6.90 meters three times at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and won the title with 6.97 meters. From 2006 to 2008 she won three Australian championship titles in a row, but was eliminated from the qualifications of the international championships in 2007 and 2008.

After the Australian outdoor season, she retired in 2009. With a height of 1.77 meters, her competition weight was 68 kilograms. She has been married to Jason Chipperfield since 2006.
