Caspar Rudolf Jhering (born January 12, 1740 in Aurich ; † May 12, 1809 ibid) worked as "Advocatus Fisci" (ie representative of the tax authorities in litigation with subjects) in the East Frisian government in Aurich. He was the founder of the "Mühlen-Brand-Societät in Ostfriesland" and its first director.

Life

His parents were the lawyer Sebastian Eberhard Jhering (1700–1759) and his wife Catharina Elisabeth Damm (* August 2, 1715, † February 25, 1756). Little is known about his early life. He probably attended the Ulricianum grammar school in Aurich and then studied in Halle . Then, like his ancestors, he entered the service of the East Frisian administration. His father, who died in 1759, was the leaseholder of Jheringsfehn . As a result, Caspar Rudolf Jhering was confronted with the country's problems early on. In this way he mediated between the peat boatmen, who needed sufficient depth for the fen canals, and the farmers, who needed a certain level of groundwater for their fields. One of the results of his mediation efforts in 1783 was the thorough cleansing of the Fehntjer low. This means that the feudal settlements are much better connected to the markets in Emden .

His most important act for East Friesland was the establishment of the "Mühlen-Brand-Societät" on April 23, 1779. As early as 1754, a "General Fire Insurance" had been established, which, however, refused to insure mills because of the high risk of fire at mills. The mills could only be insured in neighboring Holland, which cost more than 10,000 Dutch guilders a year. Therefore, 40 mills in East Friesland and Harlingerland initially joined the "Mühlen-Brand-Societät". By 1805 113 mills were already insured. The company existed until 1952 when it merged with the "Allgemeine Feuerversicherung".

He married on August 21, 1778 in Aurich Adelheid Catharine Bacmeister (* August 15, 1745; † July 15, 1785), a daughter of the government councilor Georg Albrecht Bacmeister (1702–1785). The couple had the following children:

  • Georg Albrecht (born June 15, 1779; † November 14, 1825) lawyer ∞ Anna Maria Schwers (born April 29, 1792; † February 21, 1861)
