The Elisabethfehn Canal is one of the so-called other inland waterways of the federal government and is the northwestern part of the former Hunte-Ems Canal , which, as a shipping canal , connected the Hunte from Oldenburg to the Ems via the Leda .

history

Today's Elisabethfehn Canal was built from 1855 to 1893 and leads from the coastal canal near Kampe via Kamperfehn, Reekenfeld, Elisabethfehn to the Sagter Ems near the Roggenberg farmers . The eastern part of the Hunte-Ems Canal has been part of the coastal canal since 1935, which at Dörpen is connected to the Ems, which has been expanded into the Dortmund-Ems Canal . Today the Waterways and Shipping Office Ems-Nordsee , which belongs to the General Directorate for Waterways and Shipping, is responsible.

Today's Elisabethfehn Canal also served as a fen canal to develop the previously deserted moorland. The first colonies of Moslesfehn (1871) and Elisabethfehn (1880) emerged during construction .

From the opening to the end of the First World War, the sometimes brisk shipping traffic served the peat industry. After the Second World War, commercial shipping came to an almost complete standstill. Since the late 1960s, the canal has been used practically exclusively for recreational shipping. In recent years, the tourist use has decreased and there were only about 1000 people smuggled per year.

In 2012, the operation of the Elisabethfehn Canal was in danger because the Osterhausen lock had become dilapidated and the federal government had cut funds for renovation or new construction. The Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development announced that the canal near Barßel should be closed and no longer maintained as a federal waterway. The citizens' initiative Rettet den Elisabethfehnkanal e. V. has been committed to preserving the canal ever since. The Osterhausen lock became the property of the Cloppenburg district in November 2015, as did the operation of the other locks and bridges on the canal. The Osterhausen lock structure, newly built in 2019/2020, went into operation in the 2nd quarter of 2020.

use

The Elisabethfehn Canal is part of the East Frisian canal network. Via the Leda, the Jümme and the Nordgeorgsfehn Canal you can get to the Ems-Jade Canal and on to Aurich , Emden or Wilhelmshaven .

The Elisabethfehn Canal has a water level of 13.5 m and is up to 1.5 m deep. It was originally built as part of the Hunte-Ems Canal for 40-ton ships with a length of 20 m, a width of 4.5 m and a draft of 1.2 m. Due to the silting, the canal should not have a depth of more than 90 cm.

There are four manually operated locks with usable lengths between 21.2 and 27.6 m and widths between 4.65 and 5.5 m along its approximately 15 km long course . The clearance under the seven closed bascule bridges, over which the canal can be crossed, is less than two, sometimes less than one meter.

In the main season, the locks and bridges are operated daily, including Sundays and public holidays, at eight and twelve o'clock, depending on when the passage begins. The pleasure craft have to wait at the first bridge or at the last lock. An employee of the municipality of Barßel accompanies the pleasure craft with a car, opens the bridges and operates the locks. Possibly. Advance registration is required. The lock and bridge in Osterhausen is operated by an employee of the local and beautification association from the Elisabethfehn campsite. Pre-registration is also required here.
