The lowlands of the Süd- and Mittelradde and the Marka are a bird sanctuary in the Lower Saxony town of Löningen and the communities of Molbergen , Lindern (Oldenburg) and Lastrup in the district of Cloppenburg and the town of Werlte and the communities of Vrees , Lahn , Lähden and Herzlake in the district of Emsland .

The bird sanctuary (identification: V66, Natura 2000 identification: DE3211-431) is around 4377  hectares in size. Part of the bird sanctuary overlaps with the FFH area “Markatal with Bockholter Dose”. The “ Bockholter Dosenature reserve in the Emsland district, like the “ Oberlauf der Marka / Mittelradde ” nature reserve in the Cloppenburg district, is within the bird sanctuary. The remaining 1770 hectare part of the bird sanctuary in the district of Emsland has been designated as the "Mittelradde - Marka - Südradde" landscape protection area since 2008 , which extends over around 1777 hectares. Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the districts of Cloppenburg and Emsland.

The bird sanctuary, which consists of two sub-areas, lies between Cloppenburg and Meppen . It stretches for several kilometers along parts of the Südradde , Mittelradde and Marka . The lowlands of the streams are natural sites of alder and birch forests. The swamp forests have been converted to wet grassland since the Middle Ages and used accordingly for agricultural purposes until the second half of the 20th century, before the area was increasingly drained and agricultural use intensified. The streams of the Südradde, Mittelradde and Marka were greatly expanded from the middle of the 20th century and are often straight. An extensive, open lowland area with grasslands of varying degrees of humidity extends along the streams . The area of the lowlands of the Südradde is dominated by wet grassland, while in the lowlands of the Mittelradde and the Marka, intensively used grassland predominates. Tall herbaceous vegetation and reed beds can be found in small areas . The grassland areas are partially divided by hedges and rows of trees, which were created as wind protection in the 1970s as part of land consolidations , and in places clumps of trees and small forests. Parts of the entire area are used for arable farming.

The area is an important habitat for various Limikolen , including redshank , oystercatcher , lapwing , snipe , black godwit and curlew . The curlew has one of its largest inland occurrences in the bird sanctuary in Lower Saxony. The area lies in the area of the south-eastern distribution limit of the godwit, which makes it particularly important for this species. Other bird species found in the area include: a. Skylark , meadow pipit , redstart , stonechat , quail , short-eared owl , marsh harrier and Montagu's harrier . The area is also home to small populations of the bluethroat , whinchat , nine killer, and the corncrake . Shoveler , teal and little grebe also occur in the area .

To protect the ground-nesters, a clutch and chick protection program was initiated in 2007, in which farmers who cultivate areas in the bird sanctuary can participate. As part of the protection program, areas where meadow birds breed are not cultivated for the duration of the brood and rearing of the chicks in the area of the clutch. The farmers concerned receive compensation payments for the loss of use.

To improve the living conditions of Limikolen in particular, parts of the bird sanctuary are being rewetted . Some blanks were created to enhance the habitat of Limikolen. Areas in the area of the Südradde that are publicly owned are leased to farmers subject to certain conditions. A high density of meadow birds can be found in these areas in particular. The extensification of agricultural use, the conversion of arable land into grassland and other waterlogging measures are planned.

In the past, still waters for fish farming were created in the stream lowlands. Ponds that are no longer used have become valuable habitats for dragonflies and amphibians . Various aquatic plants settle in the streams . a. Simple hedgehog cob , pond rose and water star.
