Alexander Semenovich Sjusin ( Russian Александр Семенович Зюзин , Ukrainian Олександр Семенович Зюзін Oleksandr Semenowytsch Sjusin * 9. September 1903 in Obitotschne , yekaterinoslav governorate , Russian Empire ; † 18th October 1985 in Dnipropetrovsk , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian - Soviet surveyor , university teachers , Author and climber .

Life

Alexander Syusin was born in the village of Obitochne ( Обіточне ), which is now in Chernihivka district of the Ukrainian Oblast of Zaporizhia . In Dnepropetrovsk he graduated from the local mining institute . During the Second World War he worked in an armaments company in Siberia and between 1946 and 1965 he was head of training at the Ukrainian teachers' school of the Lokomotiv ( Adylsu ) sports company . The candidate of technical sciences was from 1948 until almost the end of his life an associate professor in the Department of Geodesy at the Dnepropetrovsk Institute of Railway Transport Engineers (ДИИТа). He published 33 papers on geodesy, cartography and geography.

Sjusin was also a professional mountaineer. In the Caucasus he made 110 ascents in more than 25 years, more than 40 of which were first ascents . Its first ascent took place in 1933. With a group of Dnipropetrovsk mountaineers led by him, he first climbed the hitherto nameless Shevchenko Peak in the Greater Caucasus in 1939 and named the mountain after the Ukrainian national poet Taras Shevchenko . Sjusin wrote several books about his experiences as an alpinist.

In 1947 he became the first person from Dnipropetrovsk Oblast to be awarded the title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR for his achievements as a mountaineer.

Alexander Sjusin often climbed the summit of Elbrus , regardless of the season, often accompanied by his wife Lyudmila Chodjusch, his sons Wadim and Alescha and dozens of mountaineers whom he trained.

Since 2003 the best mountain sports trainers have been awarded the Sjusin Prize in Dnipro .
