Peat cutting machine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A peat cutting machine (short: STEBA) is a continuously self-propelled peat cutting machine with a drive motor.

history

The machine for mechanical peat cutting in the form of peat discs (sod discs with an edge length of around 15 centimeters) was invented by the German entrepreneur Hermann Backers (1916–2003) from Twist and patented in 1952. The machine replaced the work of around ten peat cutters, who until then had to cut the peat by hand. This manual peat cutting was extremely physically demanding work.

The first of three peat cutting machines were used in 1956 in the Hahnenmoor near Herzlake. The self-propelled track-mounted peat cutting machines developed by Backers were then sold in large numbers around the world. It was mainly used in Europe , Chile and Canada . The last two machines built by "Backers Maschinenbau GmbH" were delivered to Bosnia in 1997.

Mining technology

When a new peat extraction area is cut, the diesel engine-driven cutting machine drives onto the moorland. With the first dig, a trench for the peatland drainage is also created by this machine. The so-called piercing box remains in place for the time of the approximately 80 centimeter deep piercing process. After the piercing stroke has been carried out, two sods are lifted into a horizontal position by means of swivel flaps. The individual sods are then cut into slices by a pre-cutting knife on the back of the cutting knife and placed on the side next to the machine for drying and later loading and removal. Then the process is repeated again. With a feed rate of around 15 centimeters per minute, the peat cutting machine can dig around 14 slabs of sod with a trench length of 1.50 to 2.00 meters at a cutting depth of 0.80 m and a cutting width of 0.84 m. The daily output of the machine is around 1.5 kilometers of the mining route .

After the sod has been removed using the peat cutting machine, the area is reworked by deep plowing in order to mix the peat residues with the layers of sand underneath so that the soil can be better cultivated.
