The Steinerne Meer is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Belm in the Osnabrück district .
The nature reserve with the registration number NSG WE 005 is 12.7 hectares in size. The area, which consists of two sub-areas, is located northeast of Osnabrück within the TERRA.vita nature and geopark on the predominantly wooded northeast slope of the Gattberg . There is a large collection of large boulders up to 3.80 meters high that came to Central Europe during the Saale Ice Age . On the southern edge of the nature reserve and a little apart from the other boulders is the "Butterstein", the largest of the boulders. This may have served as a sacrificial stone in prehistoric times .
The area has been under nature protection since November 8, 1924 in order to preserve the accumulation of boulders as a natural monument . It was initially under protection under the Field and Forest Police Act, which was transferred to the Reich Nature Conservation Act in 1937. The date on which the regulation came into force was changed to August 7, 1937. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Osnabrück.
