Nature reserve

The "Alfhausen-Rieste flood retention basin" is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipality of Alfhausen in the joint municipality of Bersenbrück in the district of Osnabrück.

The nature reserve with the sign NSG WE 210 is 123 hectares in size. Most of it is part of the EU bird sanctuary "Alfsee". The area has been a nature reserve since December 21, 1991. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Osnabrück.

The nature reserve is located between Alfhausen and Rieste northeast of the Alfsee . It is characterized by a lake roughly in the middle of the protected area, which is surrounded by wet grassland and swamp and alluvial forests with other still waters. The grassland is used extensively , especially for mowing , sometimes also as sheep pasture. The nature reserve serves as a feeding, resting and breeding area for a large number of birds .

To the west of the lake, the 1.15 km long pass-through runs between the compensation and the outlet structure through the nature reserve. About 30 m³ of water per second can be drained from the Alfsee via the duct.

The reserve basin is only flooded during particularly large floods, when the 12.7 million m³ storage space of the main basin is exhausted and the water cannot be drained off via the hare.
