The Silberberg is a 180 meter high mountain in the district of Osnabrück in Lower Saxony . The calamine pale herb, which is threatened with extinction in this federal state, grows there .

location

The Silberberg is located in the municipality of Hagen am Teutoburg Forest , east of the Hagen district of Natrup-Hagen, south of the Heidberg and west of the Großer Heidberg. It belongs to the hill area .

Mining

From 1722 the Lutheran Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück, Ernst August II of Hanover , had silver-bearing ore mined on the Silberberg . To do this, he had miners from the Sauerland (North Rhine-Westphalia) and the Harz region brought to the prince-bishopric. The ore was mined until 1782.

Nature reserve

40.5 hectares of the Silberberg are under nature protection, of which 36.6 hectares are under protection according to the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive of the European Union. It was first placed under protection in 1937. The current ordinance on the nature reserve determines “the preservation, care and development of the poor grasslands and special structures resulting from historical uses, as well as the near-natural forests as a habitat for animal and plant species in need of protection and their communities, as well as a natural one , culturally and historically significant landscape relic of particular rarity, character and beauty. "

The limestone grasslands are a specialty of the Silberberg . Centaury from the gentian family , the orchid plants, fly ragwort , Müller's stendellus and white forest hyacinth, as well as the thorny grouse and the pigeon scabiosa grow on the nutrient-poor areas .

The calamine herb endemic in Central Europe is classified on the Red Lists of Endangered Species as “critically endangered” (Germany) or even “critically endangered” (Lower Saxony). It grows on the Silberberg on an area of a few square meters with around a hundred plants (2007).

At the Silberberg, wild plant seeds are collected for the “ Loki Schmidt Genebank for Wild Plants”, which is looked after by botanists from the University of Osnabrück . The plants are to be saved from extinction by freezing the seeds.

Six different bat species find shelter in the tunnels created by mining . The eagle owl breeds in the quarry .
