List of grape varieties

Ráthay is a red wine variety . The name is reminiscent of Emmerich Ráthay (1845–1900) from Hungary, who was director of the oenological and pomological institute of the Klosterneuburg wine school from 1893 to 1900 . The Hungarian name Ráthay is correctly pronounced "Ráthoi" (with light "á" and final "oi").

Breeding, variety characteristics, approval

As with the Roesler , it is a new breed from 1970 by Gertrude Mayer at the Viticulture School in Klosterneuburg . The parents are Blauburger and (Seyve Villard 18-402 x Blaufränkisch ). The variety is extremely hardy and very insensitive to fungal diseases, especially powdery mildew . The low susceptibility to botrytis has the advantage that the Ráthay variety has a significantly reduced need for pesticides. In this respect, this variety is particularly suitable for organic viticulture , especially since the methods approved for organic viticulture make it much easier to keep fungal diseases below the damage threshold.

In Austria, the variety approval as a quality grape variety took place in 2000 and in 2004 the variety Ráthay received EU plant variety protection . 9 hectares of the Austrian wine-growing area are planted with Ráthay (as of 2013).

Properties of the wine

Ráthay produces deep dark, full-bodied wines rich in extracts and tannins. You are ready to drink early. Because of its good color strength, the variety is also well suited as a blending partner for paler wines.
