Reiderland ( Oldambt in the Dutch province of Groningen . Until the merger with Scheemda and Winschoten on January 1, 2010 to form the new municipality of Oldambt, Reiderland was an independent municipality with 6,963 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2009) and an area of 156.72 km² . The municipality of Reiderland itself was still very young at the time of the merger; it was only established in 1990. In that year, the old municipalities of Beerta , Finsterwolde and Nieuweschans were merged. The resulting new municipality of Beerta has been called Reiderland since 1992 . The region of the same name in the east, the Rheiderland (with "h"), has been politically separated from the municipality or municipalities since the province of Groningen joined the Netherlands in 1594.

Location, economy and transport

The Dutch A7 motorway merges into the 280 federal motorway after the border . The railway line Leer – Groningen has a station in Bad Nieuweschans (today part of Reiderland), which however is no longer important as a border station in a united Europe .
The main sources of income are:
- tourism, especially in the spa town of Bad Nieuweschans,
- agriculture and
- the cardboard factory of the company Smurfit Kappa Triton .
There is also Klokken- en Kunstgieterij Reiderland .
history
The region belonged to the old Rheiderland landscape until the 15th century . It was badly hit by storm surges. While the eastern villages came under the control of the later county of East Friesland around 1430, the remaining western villages turned to the city of Groningen. The parishes of Winschoten , Westerlee , Beerta , Ulsda , Osterreide and Westerreide were assigned to the district of Wold-Oldambt ; Bellingwolde , Blijham and Houwingaham were incorporated as an independent domain of Westerwolde .
In 1628, on behalf of the governor Ernst Casimir von Nassau-Dietz, a border fortress (Nieuweschans, Neuschanz) was built on the new Groningen - Bremen road on East Frisian soil. The fortress was built with practically no legal basis. The East Frisians did not receive compensation for it until many years later. It was of strategic importance in the Eighty Years War and survived several attacks in the centuries that followed, but was razed around 1815 .
In the 20th century a noticeable political situation developed in this region. The working conditions of agricultural workers on the farms of large farmers, as well as those in the cardboard and other industries, caused great dissatisfaction among the workers , which found expression in communist or radical socialist majorities in the local councils. Around 1970, an underground spring with healing water was discovered near Nieuweschans. As a result of this discovery, the old fortress village was completely restored, a thermal bath was built and Nieuweschans became a unique health resort in the Netherlands . The name was also adapted accordingly: Since April 1, 2009, Nieuweschans has been officially called Bad Nieuweschans ( Bad Neuschanz ).
