history

The area of today's Dollart and the areas reclaimed from the sea are old settlements that were still densely populated in the late Middle Ages. The bay , like the Jade Bay , is the result of sea invasions in the late Middle Ages , during which the water largely cleared the original moorland . With the creation of the Dollard and the collapse of the Emsbank, at least 20 parishes, ten to 15 other smaller villages and three monasteries perished.

In the course of the land reclamation, the Netherlands created the Reiderwolderpolder, named after one of the places sunk in the bay. This was diked in two phases in the 19th century. The western, about 1,170 hectare, part of the polder was built in the years 1862–1864, the eastern, about 390 hectare, part of the polder in the years 1872–1874. For the drainage of the low-lying land, the Netherlands created a water passage in the dike called Neue Statenzijl, around which the place developed. A sluice was added to the sewer for inland shipping and the transport of beet. Today it is only used by sport and leisure boats.

Politically, the place belonged to the municipality of Beerta until 1989, then to 1990 to the municipality of Reiderland. This went up in 2010 in the municipality of Oldambt, to which Nieuwe Statenzijl has belonged ever since.
