history

Landscape development around riding country

The settlement is located in a landscape that is characterized by the early modern bog colonization . The planned colonization of the moor in the Oldenburger Land was only promoted in a targeted manner at the beginning of the 19th century under state management. However, Reitland is older, the first evidence of the settlement of Reitland is the Reitländer Bauernbrief from 1638, which has been handed down in a copy. The first settlement must have taken place before this letter. It is not yet known where the first settlers came from, there is a theory that they were people who sought protection in the raised bog after a flood disaster.

The operation of a school in private houses is secured for the year 1659. The Oldenburg Vogteikarte from 1799 shows that there were already around a dozen farms around the Reitland field . In 1876 the school building was given up in favor of a newly built school that operated until 1933. In 1913 a second school was added, which operated until 1967.

The life of the colonists on the moor was extremely arduous, and the drainage required heavy work. Due to the nutrient-poor soils, only a small amount of agriculture could be practiced at first; the farmers kept themselves afloat by extracting peat . By the removal of peat and the application of deeper clay layers on the surface, the soil quality has improved considerably over time.

Administrative history

Until 1811 Reitland belonged to the Vogtei Schwei .
