Oldenburg farmer's letters

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Oldenburg peasant letters (synonyms: peasant roles, village rules, peasant codes, arbitrariness) were written down rules of conduct that were created by farmers in the counties of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst during the 16th and 17th centuries in accordance with the cooperative self-government law .

A total of 87 peasant letters have become known in the two counties. Many of them are now only copies. Most of them are in the Lower Saxony State Archives in Oldenburg.

The farmer's letters mainly contained rules for maintaining order in the villages and field marks, but also traditional rules of lower self-jurisdiction. Embarrassing hand and neck punishments were left to the appointed courts. The amount of the fine (breaks) to be paid for misconduct was recorded in the individual paragraphs.

Contents of the letters

Farmer beers

Many farmers' letters stipulated that once a year a meeting of all farmers in the village took place, in which the master farmer and the jury were elected, current problems were discussed and the fines received were converted into free beer and drunk. In many places these gatherings were called "farmer beers".
